• RILEY / REGO / AUERBACH / HODGKIN

  • For Art Basel 2023, Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert will present work by four pioneering British artists.

  • Bridget Riley

    Born 1931
  • The presentation is centred by a monumental gouache ‘cartoon’ on paper by Bridget Riley, which has come direct from the artist’s studio and is one of the first of its kind to be exhibited. Composed in Riley’s iconic Rhomboid pattern, it is supported by three smaller studies that are similarly framed by a boarder of annotations that give insight into the artist’s working process.

  • PAULA REGO

    1935 - 2022
  • Three works by Paula Rego showcase her audacious painterly style, the earlier being especially illustrative of the artist’s bold proclivity for subversion through colour and bodily form. As Rego’s style turned toward the figurative, the works still embody the fantastical elements that were central to her work. Exploring the subject of palm reading, hagiographic iconography, and playing with creatures that dwarf their human counterparts, the surreal was a significant impetus behind Rego’s entire oeuvre – a crucial method in which she represented psychological experiences and disturbed received ideas of time, space, and identity.

  • FRANK AUERBACH

    Born 1931
  • Works by Frank Auerbach include portraits from his small circle of dedicated sitters and a large colourful landscape that looks towards Mornington Crescent tube station from the awning of a London pub. Also on display is a rare example of the artist’s self-portraiture; in a study of the artist’s studio, Auerbach’s face can be seen in the reflection of a mirror pinned to his studio wall.

  • HOWARD HODGKIN

    1932 - 2017
  • Three significant paintings by Howard Hodgkin each deal with an important aspect of the artist's oeuvre. Venice Sunset belongs to an impressive body of pictures influenced by Hodgkin’s many visits to Venice; an interior, Living Room, exhibits the heavy influence of the 20th century masters Edgar Degas and Edouard Vuillard; and an intimate and highly impactful painting, Fresh Air, evokes the deep-seated impression made by the artist's trips to India that underpins much of his work
