Frankie Rossi Art and Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert are proud to present an exhibition devoted to the latest series of work by the contemporary British artist Maggi Hambling (b.1945).

Maelstrom comprises a series of paintings made upon Hambling's return to the studio following a near-fatal heart attack in New York in March 2022, two days prior to an exhibition of her work opening there. During her six-week stay in a Manhattan hospital, the artist’s six-decade daily practice came to a halt. On the second day of her return to the UK, the Maelstrom series began. The resulting paintings are testaments to the tentative, determined resumption of her daily practice – and to the trauma of recovery. Having been closer to death than ever before, Hambling returned to her art with renewed urgency and force. The paintings manifest intense landscapes of experience – each is a portrait of where the heart and mind go when the body is compromised – a realm at once mysterious and challenging, sublime and intimate. Hambling’s Maelstrom paintings affirm, ultimately, what it means to be alive.

A few months before her heart attack in New York, Hambling described foreboding feelings of unease and anxiety – responses to political and personal tumult that drove her artistic practice.

Emerging from this context, this work displayed in the exhibition is a charged expression of the existential contemplations that undercut Hambling’s oeuvre at the time. A ferment of high-keyed yellow and black brushstrokes bristle with frenetic energy and wrestle to contain the anxieties of life and death:

‘This painting was clearly a premonition of what was going to happen. Having confronted the death of people I love, mortality now faced me. The maelstrom series began the moment I returned to the studio.’ - Maggi Hambling
